If any of you are intending to either enter or leave the Norfolk broads from the Sea. Here is a little video including as usual some Ariel shots. This entrance is the River Yare in Gorleston. The day i dis this filming it was very calm indeed and quite high water.

For me this entrance looks a little industrial and somehow intimidating. The other entrance is of course at Lowestoft. I will try and get there soon. Enjoy the video and if you like my videos please subscribe.

Gt Yarmouth Harbour is certainly not picturesque but it's not a difficult entrance. The big problem at the moment is that you can't get through the bridges. Even with the bridges working correctly, the port authority aren't the easiest or friendliest to deal with.

Lowestoft is also a working harbour but in our experience they are friendlier. Still bridges to negotiate and the additional issue of the lock before you get to Oulton broad.

What is the issue at present with the Bridges in Yarmouth

Haven Bridge is currently undergoing repair and the timescale has been extended into next year. There were problems with Breydon Bridge some time ago but I think it is okay at the moment. The two rail swing bridges at Reedham and Somerleyton are well last their sell-by date and regularly break down. Money has at long last been allocated to re-furbish them starting next year - but you might already be aware if this given where you keep your Sealine.
.

If you are entering Gt Yarmouth for the Northern Broads/ river Bure, to which you have to pass under two non-lifting bridges, then you do not need the Haven bridge to lift so no issue.

Sorry Plum, but you need the Haven bridge to open to get through Gt Yarmouth port - whether en route for the northern or southern broads. It's been out of action all summer which effectively meant that there is only one way into the broads - which is via Lowestoft. The swing rail bridge for Oulton Broad lock is also in need of repair and only opened twice a week. That's not too great an issue for smaller boats that can get under it - but we've had to time our passages with low tides.
You're probably thinking about Breydon Bridge

Simon, then something has changed since I went through to the northern Broads two years ago. I went under the Gt Yarmouth Haven Bridge when it was closed so no booking was necessary. The Haven bridge when closed has a greater air draft than the fixed Vauxhaul bridge just beyond it when going into the Bure.

Hi Plum - yes of course if you can get under the bridges without a lift then no problem. I think there is about 3m clearance under Haven at average high tide and 3.5 m under Breydon. Vauxhall bridge for access to northern broads is quite low -2m at avHT

As you say, Vauxhall bridge is quite low. For anyone interested, Vauxhall (fixed) bridge at Gt Yarmouth for access to the Northern broads has an air draft of 3.96m above CD so you can pass under near LW using Gorleston tidal data for Height of Tide. The bridge clearance gauge boards at Gt Yarmouth are useless near LW as there are no markings.
