Staying Haslar friday night, from chichester for 0600 depart cherbourg sat, high tide friday approx 1200, what is latest to be sensibly entering against (any) ebb, please, may be delayed by one crew driving from midlands. 9.6m sailing yacht, 5.5 knots thro water.
Thanks

I really wouldn't worry. If you can make 5.5 knots you will make it in at any time. Just remember to keep in the small ships channel - close to the port side of the entrance.

As VicS and the others say.. best within a few hours of high water although you'll get in at any time after that but it might take a few minutes longer..

I guess you've seen the current/latest notice to mariners that shows the small boat channel now that all the dredging (for the aircraft carrier) is complete..

Maybe see you in Cherbourg. We're planning on leaving Southsea marina at about midnight on Friday. Hopefully we'll get a few hours sleep early evening. With a clear night we should have a nice bright moon and a reasonable breeze...

Changing the subject rather, sorry, but wont a 0600 departure give you a foul tide all the way down the east side of the IOW ?

I was thinking the same hence the midnight departure... Although leaving on the Saturday morning will give a better wind in the afternoon late in their crossing. Doesn't look like I'll get the breeze that was being forecast for midnight Friday.. Sailgrib WR (the Android App) is actually giving a slightly faster time if we left Saturday 0600 even after fighting the NE going tide south of the Wight.. It'll be interesting.

GFS is giving 'quite breezy' for the middle part of Saturday.
I would see how the forecast develops.
You should have no real problems getting into Portsmouth against the tide, just keep as far in to the Gosport side as you can without upsetting those leaving or the harbour patrol.

Getting the tide wrong down the East side of the IOW can cost you 2 hours
Best timing Portsmouth to Cherbourg is to take the last of the East going tide to get round Bembridge ledge.
then with the whole of the West going tide down the East of the Island, you'll be well into the Channel before it ends

Thanks for advice esp re tides east side isle of Wight, now planning to leave direct for Cherbourg tomorrow morning to pick up that west tide around island as well as hopefully avoiding deteriorating forecast for saturday
