I know this may be a bit of an academic question but I have a hand held etrex legend, which I can use on land, and on rivers, but have never entered waypoints by coordinates. I have found how to, however it is set to UK Ordanance Survey. Can I set to enter lat, long from normal charts. What name do the charts go under.

I am possibly having a short fishing trip into the Wash, in the company of experienced sailers, but who have not used gps.

If you've got the manual see Setup on page 34. You want to set it to "hddd mm.mmm". You also need to change the Map Datum to "WGS 84"

If no manual you can download from: <A target="_blank" HREF=http://www.garmin.com/products/manual.jsp?product=010-00190-00>http://www.garmin.com/products/manual.jsp?product=010-00190-00</A>

Many thanks. Somehow I have lost, or thrown the manual. Probably thought I knew how to use it.

I've now read the one I downloaded yesterday, and found how to do it. I think it was changed by the salesman, experienced in it's use as he had been in the RAF and had a training accident. They issued this model to the men for navigating on training, so a good enough advert for me to buy it.

It had been set to British Ordinance Survey instead of WGS 84 for the lat long coordinates.

As I've only had to navigate on land I've never used this before, although I have the rudiments of map reading skills.
