Enigma\'s home - at last !

Left West Mersea just after midnight last Friday/Saturday night having put up new roller furling genoa in the dark with old galvanised shacles. Easy crossing of Thames Estury despite Trinty House having removed bouys from the Edinburg Channel, which was interesting. Moral: don't use old charts! Roller furling gear very stiff so rigged up spinaker block which helped. Wind got up approaching North Foreland and rapidly became SW force 8 down through the Goodwins with very confused and uncomfortable seas. Main halyard shacle broke in the outfalls off Beachy Head, so motored in to Brighton and did Helen McArthur bit. Motor-sailed through Looe Channel and met by a dolphin at Selsey Bill which played with us for 15 minutes or so. Roller furling mechanism jammed approaching the Forts in SW force 4 but managed to free it with 2lb lump hammer. Moored up in Beaulieu River at 18.30 on Tuesday evening. Other than that, pretty unadventful trip really. Drove back to West Mersea on Wednesday and spoke to sail maker who mentioned a box of blocks, shackles & instructions which came with furling gear. Trolled along to boatyard who found it under their tea hut table! Such are the trials and tribulations of yachting . . .
