engines in Fisher 25s

can anyone give me some guidance on the engines fitted to these boats - longevity, problems, replacements, spares

Really nice boats. I have a prejudice that all their owners are really skilled sailors.
Based on the fact that 100% of the owners of them I've known, i consider to be very skilled.
Sample size is only 2 and i did say its prejudice!

There is a fairly active Fishers group on yahoogroups.com why not try putting your question on there? It is mostly a North American based group but the Fishers would be the same. You would have to join of course but that would be helpful to you anyway wouldn't it? (Fisherowners@yahoogroups.com)

I could certainly do that - but I find that I learn more from posts on general forums

when researching Centaurs and Hunters the owner forums were dead quiet and there were no former owners to talk to

Well they were very active when I was thinking of buying a fisher a few years ago and I joined up. I actually ended up with a Colvic Watson and now I'm on the Colvic Watsons group which is very active.

Originally Volvo MD2B, later Yanmar 2QM but as already suggested many will have been replaced. Size 20-25hp needed to deal with the weight. As you found out buying your Centaur you have to consider each boat on its merits as the answer to you question will depend entirely on what engine is now fitted to boats you look at.

A very lively owner's group here:

Great boats, a neighbour has superb one. They are very impressive when you go onboard. Even though the style of boat is not my particular cup of tea I can certainly see the appeal. I think he fitted a Beta 25 or was it a Yanmar? I shall ask him

Dylan, my long-running liking for the F25 led me in search of many details that weren't clear in Northshore brochures; I hope this plan shows heights relative to the waterline...

I remember that 27 or 29hp was standard for the F25; I also recall a 39hp installation being described as far too much - presumably because although the boat is 4.5 tonnes, that much power was far more than is required to reach hull speed in moderate weather, so in most circumstances the engine wouldn't be at its own optimum running speed.

I wonder why Dylan is interested in them - it's not really suitable for his type of sailing.

I think he's looking on behalf of a mate - though I expect he could be persuaded by the F25's weatherproof appeal...if he could find one that stands upright when the tide's out...

...that's a picture of the rare F25 with 'legs', described elsewhere.

Mine has the original MD2B - only had the boat for a season, but the engine appears to be fine (commissioned a specific engine survey before putchase)

My view is that I run the engine until it dies, and in the meantime build up a cash reserve to replace it when necessary as many of these old engines have plenty of life left in them

My previous boat had an MD1 which expired at circa 44 years old, and the failure was from an auxilary component not the engine itself - if repaired (accepting that it is not economical) then the engine would probably last for many years
