Hi
I am thinking of getting a dell quay dory 13 as a fun family boat to explore creeks and do some watersking off.
Can anyone recomend an engine size that would be approprate to puller a skier with up to 4 people in the boat
Thanks
Andrew Ing

Dory 13 is quite small as a ski boat, but not bad for 4 peeps. 25 HP should get you planing well but the ski element will require possibly 40. If you want to keep the size and weight down try wake boards or a small surf board as they plane quicker and are just as much fun. If you think you might want to mono ski then more power reqd. but the dory will be a little twitchy and not track straight if the skier is a bit butch on corners or crossing the wake. Smaller outboards cost less too. Hope that helps a bit. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

For Skiing you will require at least a 40, better a 50. Bear in mind that in any kind of small chop a Dory will slam and bounce like hell and you will have to slow right down and even so be very uncomfortable. Also as the hull has no 'bite' a heavy skier will pull the stern from side to side on any slalom.

It would be fast and ski with a 25hp but if you have 4 peeps in the boat then I'd agree with byron, definitely get a 40hp or even 50hp. Check the weight of engine before you buy, get a light one.

A dory 13 with that engine cannot be manhandled easily, will need trailer or berth. But it will be tight, space-wise, for a group of 5 peeps. So, why not get a 15 or 16 foot dory. Loads more room than a 13 foot and if not too heavy will still be fun and ski-able with a 50hp (though 60hp better). Or a RIB.

A friend and I used to waterski with a DQ 13 and a 40 on the back.It was hard work mono deep-water starting with just the one in the boat.Four up and a skier on two would be a 70+.
Another friend used to use a Merc 75 on his DQ13 but I don't remember ever seeing four up and him skiiing-2/3 max.Hope this helps /forums/images/graemlins/ooo.gif
p.s. skiied non-stop from West Wit to the IOW behind a DQ 17 with a Yamaha 70 and 3 in the boat.I also would go for a 15/17 to allow for power and peeps as suggested above /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Sheesh. You sure it was a DQ13, not a 17? I have never seen a DQ13 with a 75, esp a merc 75 which is quite heavy (4 cyl and same leg castings as in-line-6 150hp). It would be a pretty extreme set up and way beyond the manufacturer's quoted limits. It would go like the clappers and I would not recommend it for a beginner.

Yuo can never have enough power when deep water start monoskiing , but a 13foot boat with 75hp would be fine for that imho - have done it often on a 15 footer

Hiya JFM,
Yes it was a 75 on a 13 but he weighed about 13 stone and if you don't want to spend forever being dragged through the water before popping out then it's necessary.
I agree that it's not a starter's pack,so to speak, but added it to try and show each end of the spectrum as Andrewing wasn't clear about the type of skiing with four up.

p.s. my dq 17 with a 70,skipper and watcher struggled to get two up,one on mono, other on twins with a s/s prop chuckle!! /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

You want to also look at the Catch22 great boat if you like the Dory and great with a 90 on the back.

All in new packages around £15k inc engine console etc.
