Hi all
We have a Penta 2003T that’s been left standing for 2 years that I’d like someone to check over. I’m waiting for callbacks from a few, but would like some recommendations if possible.
Thanks

So are Volspec at Woolverstone, I expect they will travel, our experience with FM was not great.
I've no experience of them as engineers; I've only bought parts from them. Hence the "not exactly a recommendation". My experience was that they knew what parts were needed when I described what I was doing and had them available, including on one occasion a part no longer available from Volvo for which they'd had a replacement part made that was better engineered than the original Volvo part (the banjo bolt for the injectors, described in another post).

Hi all
Thanks for the replies. Very much appreciated. Received a PM and had a chat with Paul Rainbow who has positive reports in other places on the forum.
Job being done next week. Will bear these recommendations in mind for the future.
Cheers, Steve

Be sure to check three things.

Firstly, check for any corrosion of the oil cooler. This is alloy-bodied and if it corrodes through the oil will escape into the bilge and your engine will be wrecked unless you spot it in time.

Secondly, check for any rust on the steel pipe which delivers oil under pressure to the turbo. Rust can cause pinholes which allow oil to escape and your engine will be wrecked unless you spot it in time.

Thirdly, check the engine mounts for cracks. The forward ones are prone to cracking; the replacement part is a better design.

I need to correct something I posted. It's the rear mounts which are prone to cracking, although I actually had all 4 mounts replaced on a 22 year old 2003T.

Also, I found a photo of my oil cooler. There had been a bit of oil under the engine, which I'd assumed was a crankshaft oil seal leaking. A careful look revealed a hole in the oil cooler, due to corrosion of the alloy body. You can't just buy the body, you have to buy the complete oil cooler, which was around £700 in 2012. It's around double that today!
