Engine work...it makes me ache

Oh for the days of youth, when taking a turbo out wouldn't have made me groan, or think about "how the hell am I actually going to move this, if I manage to bend my unwilling body enough to undo all the hidden bolts", and how long will it take for the aches to go away.
Probably just in time for when I'm fitting it all back together.

Luckily enough I was able to buy a couple of spare engines for parts, so now I've only got to change some fittings over and simply (yeh) put it back together.
 
I had to put up a new fench in the back garden on Sunday. Big sledge hammer, lots of cutting fence posts......my left hand still doesn't work properly (and no i didn't hit it with the hammer)

At least you didn't need pie eating Mitch's help this time...unlike when we did the head gaskets. Remember all the shaking? /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Hope it goes back together ok, remember we've got that dinner date in France later in the year! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
 
Nice to see Al, and reminds me that I need to take my camera along when I do work on my lumps (Burns Supper this WE so limited activities on Sat/Sun).....Did not know you had problems with your turbo(s)? ..

Anyway, nice to see a prestine engine room ... much like mine /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Is that the intercooler on 2nd picture next to port engine? ... interesting shape if it is... Also dry turbos?? .. must be getting hot down there .. so please do take care with the lagging.

BTW ... how much fire supression coverage have you got down there? ... I'm getting quotes for a new full flood system now and it is getting scary.

Yup, remember hitting them with a copper mallet and thinking they were seized because they wouldn't move, when they were totally free........just four times heavier than we thought.
It does look a tad messy down there Alf, not to worry, all be spick and span when its back together (after cleaning up the skin I'll leave behind).
The starboard turbo has decided to stop turning, could be something to do with the carbon removed from one of the exhaust manifolds a little while ago, but to be honest, they are 36 years old!
Thanks for the tip botheras but strangely, I may moan about it but don't mind it....weird!
 
Just tongue & cheek really on the status ... but not too dis-similar from mine ... the older lumps tend to generate some "mess" by default... /forums/images/graemlins/ooo.gif

Anyway, trust the spare engines have working turbo's and that the old, seized one may be repearable ... basic stuff really and you may be able of getting a re-built one as part exchange if you're lucky ... thought the turbo on yours were quite similar to the Ford's and Perkins of the time ... but then again, I could be totally wrong...
 
Third picture down, the turbo in the trolley is the one thats just come out, the other one is going in after a cleanup.
I got the engines (needed two as they are handed) for under £600.00. One of the wiser moves I've made.
That is the inter cooler on the floor, and one of Albert's toys on the port engine. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
 
Just engine work................. you lucky sod!:p

Rubbing down, painting, varnishing, general maintenance polishing, servicing and cleaning all make me ache! Lord knows what I'm going to be like when I get old!

The tip on using anti inflammatory is a good one although i try and avoid it unless absolutely necessary. /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif
