Engine wont start - MD22L

they have all been charging for the best part of 15 months!!

If they have been on charge for that length of time, have you checked the electrolyte levels in all the cells?

Secondly, you really need to measure the voltage from the battery bank whilst under cranking load. This will be less or much less than off load voltage.

Under cranking, the voltage might even drop to 8 - 10 volts which immediately tells me that one or more battery cells needs to be looked at. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

The Halfords gizmo jumped to the engine battery wouldnt start the engine - same symptoms as before, so I could feel a starter motor strip down coming on /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Bit the bullet and attached the wires from the engine battery to the domestic bank, (actually only involved moving the +ve connection.

BINGO the engine turned and started - so I need a new battery which needs to be a similar physical size to the existing one in order to fit and fill the space).

BUT, having fired up, the engine ran with a strange deep throated note which I had heard before.... checked for water out of exhaust - NIL... turned engine off.

Opened up raw water strainer... bit of weed but not enough to stop the flow... opened the valve and water flowed in.... opened impellor casing and water flowed out.... one arm of the impellor had ripped, but not right off.

I'm guessing the impellor was jammed having sat for 10 months since last use - replacement scheduled for later this evening.

Thanks to all for the help in diagnosing the problem - particularly Nick who assumed that my initial voltage readings were taken with the battery charger off, and said so /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif . If he hadnt, we would all have assumed that the battery was fine, and I would be up to my neck in starter motor /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Now may need a bit of help with fitting the impellor - another post.
