Dear forum,
Got a strange problem. My Mercruiser 4.2 diesel wouldn't shut off when I turned the key off the other day. At the time I just starved it of fuel and she shuddered to a halt but today I managed to disconnect something behind the dash panel (I'm not entirely sure what) which stopped the engine too.
There is a start button which works, the stop button has been disconnected at some point in the past, so normally to shut it off I just turn the key.
Ignition key switch tested and fine, batteries tested and fine.
Other possibly related problems:
Rev counter is alternator driven and needs some encouragement to get going (i.e. revving to about 1000rpm - although once running I can drop back to idle and it'll still charge) - sometimes the rev counter bounces around a bit at higher (over 2000) rpm
Quite low output charge from alternator once going (13-13.2 volts) but batteries are fully charged.
Thoughts? Alternator backfeed?
