Engine well in a Centaur - possible?

A 15hp mariner is going to set you back 2 grand plus the cost of chopping a hole in your boat. Together with the inconvenience of having a big hole in your cockpit and I really can't see the point.

All you need to do next is to add retractable twin keels and rudder and you will have the perfect KTL boat !

well..... as I get further North....and have to spend more time coering down below

I am planning on spending three weeks on the boat next month

if it rains for three weeks I shall be thinking about Centaurs again and all that space

the engine well works so well in Katie L

and I only used three gallons of fuel between the Humber and Scotland

the Tohatsu charges batteries really well

and what with solar panels......

I assume a 9hp with the right prop would shove a centaur along pretty well

Well I'd be interested to hear how well the engine well would work if having drunk from a well you found yourself unwell in your wellingtons whilst heading to Wells.

I would fit a trusty Seagull engine, you could wrap emery cloth around the flywheel and make a few shillings sharpening knives and scissors on it whilst moored in the harbour.

I reckon it's a lot of faffing around for an unsatisfactory solution which would probably cost more than bringing a dud engine up to scratch. In fact once you've factored everything in you could probably buy a boat with a decent engine.

If you really had to use an outboard - surely a bracket bolted onto the back would be cheaper and less drastic..

But yeah if course it would be possible. Most things are possible.

I know a chap that sails a 35 foot job with a 10hp outboard on the back. It is a very sharp sailing boat though and he is unlikely to find himself stuffed up downwind and unable to make progress. Just a important he would not be putting himself in dodgy tight situations with it. Dodgy tight situations are your forte. The Centaur has plenty of windage as AngusMcDoon has intimated.

Coo, it would be hard work to fit in the well; tho one plus point is that you could pee down it when underway. An advantage not to be underestimated, in later life

It might be easier to fit a new 12hp diesel.

scoop bailer is my friend when it comes to under way

and a well is useless for peeing - the outboard fills the hole

as for a 12hp inboard.....

an outboard is cheaper

so chaps..... what outboard to buy?

You have good experience with Tohatsu so if you are going to do it why not stick with them? I know they do a 9.9 saildrive one. Do they do a similar 15?

they do a long shaft 9.8hp

and the 2.3 honda shoves katie L at five knots

around £2,200 to re-engine a centaur

starting to think now....

however, Katie L is fine until I finish this trip

then maybe something bigger

I have a jigsaw in the garage

Why not just buy one where the engine isn't knackered?

because it would cost a lot and I am now finacially terrified of inboards

I read these threads and it's clear the 'inboard supporters' really don't get the fear that you (and I/some others) feel.... it's like we talk past each other..... may be it's just easier to say "I like an outboard engine in a well as much as you like an inboard engine, neither of us understands why the other feels that way, so why don't we just accept everyone is different".... :D
