I have a Yanmar 3GM30F which does not have a raw water filter. It has been suggested that I fit a Vetus filter. The raw water pipe from the seacock to the impeller goes over the top of the engine and is 19mm internal diameter. Are there any foreseeable difficulties in fitting this myself.

Shouldn't be. Just check the water flow specified for the engine to make sure you get the right filter. Mount it where convenient to get at. Mount it so that the filter element is just above the waterline so that you can open the housing with the sea cock open or closed - see the Vetus website for more information.

Be very careful about installing the Vetus water filter. Personally, I recommend installing it slightly below the waterline (not just above it as Vetus recommend) because if you do not get a perfect seal (which you probably won't, at least I never do) it will draw air in and your engine will cook itself. (Don't ask me how I know that...)

If it is below the waterline under all plausible motoring conditions this won't occur.

I also recommend slathering the threads in Vaseline to make assurance doubly sure.

After all, there is a seacock on the inlet.
