Can anyone shed any light on this ….

I’ve got an VP 250 (AQ151 with 290 SP-A leg). The engine was running rough, so I cleaned out the carbs and re-aligned the timing, went well for a couple of minutes, then stopped dead, like it was seized but had play a couple of millimetres either way on the crank, was not able to turn it over on the starter motor or by hand using the crank.

I took the plugs out which all looked ok and she was still not able to turn over. Replaced the battery for a new one, still the same. I then checked the valves, starter motor etc.. and these were all fine. The prop could turn both ways in neutral, when in forward only one way and again in reverse only the other way. I left it for a day and was able to then turn it over using the starter motor (with the plugs in) very slowly in gear, this freed it up slightly and was able to turn the crank by hand but it was very tight. I then tried turning it over using the starter motor in neutral, forward and reverse and prop turned the correct way when in gear and not at all in neutral but was very slow as through it was struggling to turn it over and would not catch. The engine had stopped a couple of times before but this I believe was due to a fault alternator which I have had replaced (when it was running the volts were OK on the gauge).

Any ideas, I think it could be the bearing in the upper part of the sterndrive ? A the boat is in the water I have not been able to pull the drive off to check the engine turns when disconnected to the drive.

i know its simple but you havent mentioned...what was the oil level like? chances are if the main bearings or rings have been failing for a period of time the oil may have some tell tail signs...

If theres play in the crank is this play in the rotaion, thrust or side to side movement?

Thanks for the reply, I've not checked the oil in the leg but the oil in the engine was fine, not cloudy etc.. and the same level. The play is rotational, when I took the starter motor out you could see the fly wheel rotating with the small amount of play I had,.

hi .. im not an expert by a long way, but , its sounds like a partial siezure of a piston. the person you need is volvopaul of this parish. he is more than an expert !!!!

A bit of an update, she was turning freely a week after but then locked up again. Checked the drive oil and when I took off the dipstick there was a sucking noise and no oil, filled her up and she was turning lovely, even fired her up and idled well. I then checked the drive again and there was a oil in the water, looks like its coming from the bellows so something could be adrift there. I don't think its coming from anywhere else, checked the oil level and she was down, topped up and ok so I don't think the bearings are totally trashed and I think the problem lies in the bearing house. I think I may need to lift out to check.

Spoken to Dave, as its a volvo hes given me a few pointers but has recommended wigmores. I've also spoken them (exchanged upper drive would be easier (upwards of a grand !)) and also quite a few others in and aroun cardiff, all very helpfuly but really the boat needs to be lifted to have a better look as the upper bellows will need to come off etc...

I'm sure the problem lies in the bearing box, to get a rough idea of price I'll give key part a shout tomorrow for seals and bearings. I thought I was there last week once the engine fired up on all 4 and sounded good.
