Engine upgrade

What would it cost to upgrade to bigger engines . Currently have TAMD40 165hp x2
600hours . What would it cost to buy a pair of Volvo 260hp + Part ex old eng. and fit new ones.. Would it be cheaper to sell boat P35, & start again . By the way no good at D.I.Y. Maybe forum members would like to do it as a project for magazine article. Tea & biscuits supplied.

Definitely cheaper to change the boat. You would be hard pushed to get change from 20 grand and you'd never recoup this when you sell the boat on.
Maybe DIY might save a bit, personally, I couldn't be shagged with it.

No expert on this, but using a bit of common sense. If you sell your boat for, I don't know, 70 grand maybe, then there's 8% + VAT going to a broker, so say 6 grand. Then buying another P35 with 200hp X 2 going to cost what, 10K more, at least. So that's 16 grand plus you've got to pay out.

If you have two new engines, as someone reckoned 20K. You've then got new engines, and the boat you know & love(?). So I would have thought re-engining a viable option.

Will the up rating to bigger engines give you the sort of extra urge you think you need.although 200 hp appears to be a vast increase the actual extra performance could possibly be only 10-15% more whoosh?

The latest upgrade in the pipeline for me at the moment is a pair of 71B volvos, 380 hp done 1000 hours with boxes, customer is having bigger engines so these are available at 10K for the pair. bit big for you though I think.

I believe I am right in saying that you can increase the power of your 165's to 200.

Volvo will deny it, but a friend/ engineer with a Princess 30DS, is doing just this. Bought the kit of parts from Keypart.

Not quite 260hp but might be a more practical alternative.

Re: Toldyerso syndrome

I am refraining from sticking in my 2p to Barry, too, who is giving us a load of "our boating requirmenets have changed" on another thread. But, I can't see why his boating needs wd have changed in 4 months - surely a new toothbrush would fit in the old boat.

Re: Toldyerso syndrome

TCM - IMHO what a load of round spherical objects you talk on this matter!!! Er... course our needs would alter after 4 months. In month ZERO we knew nowt but what I thought I knew, and what info I could glean form this august body of reprobate boaters. I got what I thought would be a good boat for the season fully expecting to change it once we'd had the pleasure. Well it so happens that we've had the pleasure and I'm changing it sooner than I thought.

Can't have got it much wrong as my "dump" price for the horrible petroly boat and to a boatyard is only a K or so down on what I paid for it. They should make a tidy sum on it, however I'm out of it with what I wanted - loads of good experince some ("Dungerness Soup") gained with many thanks to you.

Re: alright alright

so, does the "old" boat have to go back to Burnham? And where's the new one? Soon, we'll all be massively more experienced due to barry's fleet of boats being moved around between marinas.

Ahh...

Funny you should ask, if I can deliver it to Eastbourne then I get another £500. Any takers for this Sunday?
