Can anyone advise please. What size battery in terms of power do I need for a Bukh DV20 engine. The hand book says no bigger than 85AH but the old battery has given up the ghost and it's 110AH, but I think it's a compromise between a starter and domestic battery. I would like to replace it with a dedicated starter battery. Any thoughts. Thanks.

It's CCA that matter, not Ah. I've just repalce a 126Ah starter battery with a 100Ah - merely because it was available, and fits the box. Anything smaller would rattle about.

When I bought the old girl she had 3 Varta 70 a/h fitted one of which was the dedicated Emgine start..
I've replaced them with 3 x 75 a/h Vartas Plus a 680 CCA Odessey which is really small..
The Vartas now supply everthing excapt engine ( Bukh 24 ) starting which is covered by the Odyssey.. You can see details of them all on

http://www.bardenbatteries.co.uk/

The Odeddey is not cheap but they can be mounted on their sides and take up minimal space..
So far, after three years, no problems and stacks of capacity (well 225 a/h i/o 140 a/h) from the 3 Vartas for all the electronics and fridge...
That's the kiss of bleedin' death I s'pose!
Cheers Bob E...

I have never heard of a 'no more than' size quoted for an engine start battery. I have just fitted an extra battery dedicated to engine start (for a Yanmar 2GM20) and fitted a 95Ah (about 680CCA) as it was cheaper than a 70Ah from the same supplier. Shop around for the best price as Halfords were about £20 more than I paid from a local battery outlet (Exeter Battery Centre, excellent). It also gives me a little in reserve if the domestic batteries ever go a bit low.
