Engine start battery - how far away is possible?

Having decided to upgrade the batteries (size) and alternator output this winter, I have to find space for the bigger batteries.

One option that minimises the wood butchery needed is to move the engine starter battery to under the navigator's seat, but that means there'll be a cable length needed of some 4-5 feet from battery to starter.

Too much? Huge cables to minimise losses? Manageable?

Thoughts?

Shouldn't be an issue as long as you upgrade the battery cables to suit.
Remember, many cars (e.g. BMW) have their batteries in the boot and their engines in the front, (for weight balance) - similar separation distance to what you are proposing.

If possible, find out what maximum current is drawn by your starter, then work out from tables what size cables you need to minimise losses.
Someone on here will post with values in a minute I'm sure. If not, there's plenty of information from the interweb if you do some research.

Just one more point, ensure you route the cables carefully to avoid chafing on sharp edges etc and clip them well all along their new route.

Our batteries are under the nav seat and the cable run to the engine must be nearly 2m (x2) possibly slightly more if you add the bit from the battery to the isolator. The cables are pretty chunky, 35 or 50 sqmm probably, never found a problem either with charging or starting the engine.

As said that distance is no problem. Mine is under the saloon seating. However, you might want to consider using a micro start battery such as a Red Flash or Odyssey which are physically much smaller and lighter and can be mounted in any orientation.

Bit of thread theft, how many CCA would be needed for a VP2020?

I think you will find that VP merely stipulate a 70Ah battery for the whole MD2010 to MD2040 range.

Any 70Ah starter battery will have suitable CCA rating. They vary from under 600 amps to over 700 amps ... take your pick.
