Decided to do my own engine service this year (how hard can it be?)
Two questions, last year both fuel filters were replaced I'm inclined to do this same this year is this sensible?
Any general advice that would help me?

Depends how hands on you are but most owners should do it at least once when they have the time to do it and have the confidence to do the basics if required later.
Biggest argument you will get here is how to get the old oil out!
My preference is aldi /Lidl’s 12v oil pump
Yes do both filters again easier done when it suits you

I always replace both filters, not entirely sure it is necessary but as easy to do two as one.
As for tips I use a hand pump to get the old oil out, but whatever you use having a roll of kitchen towels handy is very useful. Also making sure you have a clear space to work and the tools to hand

Got one and it's a good, inexpensive, piece of kit. My engine has a built in oil extraction pump but I've used it for emptying the fuel tank.

It's not difficult, and there's lots of information in the Operator Manual (which you can download if you don't have a copy).

I'd change the primary fuel filter certainly, but I'd consider changing the secondary fuel filter (the one on the engine) depending on hours run since the last change, together with an assessment of how much dirt was in the old primary filter. If you cut the top off a 2 litre water bottle, the bottom makes a good receptacle to contain the old primary filter and spilt diesel.

When you've changed the filter(s), you can bleed the system simply by pumping the big button on the secondary filter. There's no need to open a vent plug - the air will just get pumped through the fuel return pipe and back to the tank.

I use a Pela vacuum pump to empty the sump, it's easier if you run the engine up to operating temperature first.

I used to change my fuel filters every year. More recently, we've only been doing 30 hours a year so have been replacing every two years. I fill both filters with diesel before refitting + make sure the system is fully bleed before starting. I can be a real pain if you pull air through. I use a Pela oil extractor.
