My 5L V8 merc (petrol) Has done about 50hrs since its last service in Sept 03. It was antifouled at the same time. Boat is in fresh water.

Q1 - Should I antifoul it now or wait till end of season.

Q2 - I know I need one now but what should my service interval be in the future.

Q3 - Is service interval more engine hour related or time related or both.

Q4 - What (in reality) does a service involve

Q5 - What is serviced on the leg.

1. Up to you - is it still working?
2. Depends on the hours on the engine but you would normally work on annually with some additional items cropping up from time to time (like water pump impellor and belts) - just like a car really.
3. As 2
4. covered
5. link covered this too -
General Outdrive Servicing to include:

Remove outdrive

Check steering linkage

Change Gear oil

Grease propeller splines and check propeller bush

Check gear change operation and linkages

Check outdrive mounted impeller on sea water pump

Grease U/J joints

Check oil level in trim reservoir

Check condition of drive bellows

Check condition of drive bonding/earthing

Check condition of drive and transom corrosion protection (anodes)

Replace outdrive, connect gear change and tilt cylinders

Test tilt/trim and steering movement

Report any further problems or faults to the customer.

- some bits will be leg dependant ie a BIII doesn't have a water pump but a Alpha 1 does. Some legs have sealed for life UJs etc.

First you dog the engineer, who will say, I,m to busy, then you dog him again some weeks later. You carry on doing this and hopefully it will get done about once a year. Mines still waiting for it's winter service, it's winter lay up and anode/ antifouling occurred last June. Hope this helps!! /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

your engine as a rule should be serviced every 100 hours or anually. With the outdrive oils and anodes anually, bellows every two years. Antifouling on hull and drive anually, normally before season starts.

Yes the stainless anodes have done as expected. Have not found the need to change one in five years!
