Engine Sale - Buyer Scam?

I never knew there were so many unsafe ways of paying for stuff on eBay. I just pay with PayPal and settle automatically with my debit card. I must be lucky as I've never had any problems.
I bought a car once of the site for £14k the seller would only accept cash and the car was in Devon 3hr train ride away so I had to travel all that way with a massive wad in my coat pocket. Anyway all was well and I still have the car 10yrs later.

So, an update from the OP, as things are moving on.

I've received (via Paypal) the full asking price of the engine. The buyer has arranged (and paid for) collection of the engine by Fedex, which is happening tomorrow. It's been a bit of a pest because I'm a helpful person, so I've arranged all of the packaging. I've checked out the name/address of the buyer inthe USA (turns out he's a registered democrat - amazing what Google can tell you), so that all seems genuine. If I'm being scammed out of a 20 year-old engine then good luck to the guy - seems a lot of trouble (taking into account the shpping costs) for a relatvely small amount of money/old engine. I do, however, know where he lives!

I'll provide a final update once the engine has been delivered and we're all happy (or not).

We broke up a volvo 2003T, boat based in Ardrossan. Bits of the engine went to Canada, new zealand and a host of other countries. I've also sold loads of raymarine stuff and most of it ended up in Europe and norway. Looks like the UK is the pound shop for second hand marine stuff.

A final update. The engine was delivered to the buyer yesterday and he is delighted.

So, in summary, not a scam. Just a guy who needed an MD2030 engine and was prepared to air-freight a 20-year-old unit from the UK to the USA!

I'm reasonably confident that won't happen, as the buyer has sent me photos of the engine unpacked in his garage, saying that he's very happy with it. I'm long enough in the tooth, though, to expect the unexpected!

It's a sad indictment of today's world that, when something slightly out of the ordinary occurs, one immediately suspects a scam.

I'm selling an old engine on Apollo Duck, pickup only from Ayrshire, Scotland. I've been contacted by someone in the USA who's interested. I've explained that it's pickup only, 20% deposit to reserve, remainder before pickup, paid via Paypal. The 'buyer' has a friend in the UK, to whom I've spoken. This friend will organise the shipping.

So, scam or no scam?
I put a Tractor on eBay at £7700 and I was contacted by someone in Czechoslovakia who said the wanted it and knew someone in the UK who would pay a deposit, a few days later I was handed £1000 in cash as a deposit and a week later a truck arrived, I was given the balance in cash and they took the Tractor away.
I was selling a Speedboat on Boats & Outboards and a buyer contacted me from Poland and they arrived week later, paid me cash and took it away.
