Had the engine serviced over the winter when the boat was ashore by a professional engineer, now back afloat and it starts promptly, runs fine for 3-4 mins then stops, starts again straightaway but same happens, have checked the obvious like fuel turned on etc!

Any ideas? Sounds like lack of fuel or air in the fuel system?

The engine is a vetus 42 HP which seems to be self bleeding feed via a CAV type primary fuel filter.

I had a similar thing a few years ago when I changed the CAV filter myself and got the several rubbers seals in a muddle and Seastart kindly pointed out that it was a good idea to remove all the old seals from the groove in the metal housing before adding new ones!

The engineer has offered to visit and says it might be an air lock or pocket and will re visit, the problems of servicing with the boat ashore when you can`t run the engine for any length of time.

Anything worth me checking whilst awaiting the engineer?

If it was running just fine before and now, effectively immediately therafter, it doesn't then obvious suspicion falls upon the service. Air in the fuel system would be a good place to start. Any obvious fuel leaks?
Could it be the stop solenoid getting a rogue signal? Does the engine take load? Stall any quicker under load? Does it stop abruptly or sound like it's run out of fuel? Any prior history?

It's an air leak somewhere. I had this some years ago after fitting a new engine. Started and then stopped after a few minutes after 50 hrs running. Went round and tightened all fuel unions and cured the problem. Did not find any obvious loose union but has run perfectly since.
