Engine room whistle

Broom 35cl twin Volvo 130 HP. A loud whistle in the engine room has started on 1 engine when warm after 1500 revs. It stops when throttled back and returns after a few minutes. Any ideas please

Alternator belt ? Load up the electrics served by that altenator, see if it gets worse.

Turbo, bearing or air/exhaust leak.

Split or crack opening up under load and or heating.

What would this do?

most likely noise from turbo, could be:-

all lead to more noise, worse when loaded.

small hole in exhaust before water injection

air leak on induction side,and on the boost side including loss of air cleaner, (mentioned earlier).

dirt clag etc on induction side in the turbo, and inter cooler if fitted, leading to overspeeding of turbine

excess carbon on exhaust turbine, and after area.


turbo out of balance, more whistley the worse the balance.

bearing failure started
