Engine replacement VP 2003 for ???

I suppose that's true. A spray of paint isn't 'refurbishment' - a full strip down and replacement of internals would easily put the cost to £3000+ and then, how do you know what's been done.

A properly refurbished 2003 will just slot in and give you another 20 years use for a couple of thousand. No electronics, beast you know, spares you have.
I did exactly this in 2020 with a recon engine from a place in Christchurch. Less than £2.5k all in. Same weight, same saildrive, and as CJT mentioned, no electronics! Very pleased.
Backward thinking? Not at all, just a pragmatic solution for a boat worth only a few tens of thousands. 1000hrs so far with 100% reliability. And I have a full engine in the shed as a source of spares.

I replaced my VP 2003 with a Beta 30.
Pros:- easy fitting to replace the VP
Cheaper spares
Warranty doesn't require dealer servicing

Cons; new prop needed as rotation reversed
Err-- that's it

I never noticed any change in exhaust arrangement apart from a high level loop being fitted. The rest of the system was only changed wher renewal was needed.
The engine has performed well and required only oil and coolant changes since installation in 2019.

It depends on how long you plan to keep the boat. Fitting costs are just the same unless you DIY and you find other bits need replacing as you do it anyway - but you end up with a 40 year + obsolete engine.

The exhaust bit is easier with a Beta as the fabricated elbow can either be modified or I believe Beta now to one that takes the outlet over to the other side. Many boats with the older engines have the whole system running down the starboard side and the outlet on the new is on the port. The Nanni has a fixed cast outlet and when I replaced a Yanmar with one I had to re-route the exhaust. Not a big deal for that boat but it is a consideration. The diameters can be different as well so an adapter may be needed.
