I am about to re engine my yacht and have been exploring what might be the right engine for me. It has been suggested that a Sole diesel is an option I should consider. Has anyone had any experience of them? I believe that they are spanish and are based upon a Mitsubishi format.

Thanks in advance for your help

Suggest you have a serious look at Yanmar, I have one in my boat an am very impressed.

I believe it is one of the few, if not the only, engine that is designed as a marine diesel as opposed to being derived from a car, lorry or other type.

You need to give more information.
Power required, What boat it's going in etc.

Go for the simplest option available. Know nothing of the engine you have mentioned.

Some things that you have probably already thought of, or might help sway your choice....

/forums/images/icons/frown.gifElectronics have no place on a marine diesel.
/forums/images/icons/smile.gifWhat sort of back up can you expect, can you buy impellors at any port in your siling area for instance.
/forums/images/icons/mad.gifCan you get around the engine in your boat, different engines have different layouts, check the sump plug, oil filter etc.
/forums/images/icons/cool.gifWill you be able to use your current morse controls
/forums/images/icons/blush.gifWill it fit in your boat with out cutting, can you get it down the hatchway for example.
/forums/images/icons/shocked.gifWarranty, does it have to be proffessionally fitted? Check this one.....
/forums/images/icons/smile.gifMeasure your stringers
/forums/images/icons/cool.gifCAN IT HAND START, or can you decompress if your battery is low.
/forums/images/icons/laugh.gifWhat size alternator comes as standard
/forums/images/icons/cool.gifIs the exhaust the same diametre as the one you have fitted, will your exhaust reach the new engine, all these little things add up the cost.

Hope some of these things help, I have yanmars, we had them in most of our family boats, nice, simple and easy to maintain. I can, if push comes to shove pull mine out and work on them in the galley / companionway. Every marine engine shop sells the bits I need. There is plenty of back up, for instance most people on here seem to have yanmar, Volvo (spit, spit), or Beta. I think Yanmar is the cheapest in all aspects of these three.

Kim, can we have some bullets for mark up please lol

Have a Vetus M3.10 which is a Mitsubshi unit - 3 cylinder, freshwater cooled and 20hp. Reliable unit, uses no oil, about 750 hours on it so far.

Sole engine parts are available in NZ, this suggests that they are widely distributed. A look in the phonebook should show how many suppliers there are in your area. After all, Spain isnt that far away from the UK.

Hello Richard:

Katoema has a Sole 62, which replaced a Thornycroft last year after an extensive search for an alternative. The refit allowed me to change and add other equipment for a circumnavigation. The criteria for the selection of all the equipment had two things in common: operational history and obtainability. The former was used for reliability and the latter for obtaining spares and servicing.

The research for the engine was vast and what came out of it was very surprising. Sole is one of the oldest engine makers in the world, while the Mitsibushi base is used by some of the most well known engine makes that you would not even think about. The knowledge that there is a global network of service agents and easily obtainable spare parts, for a circumnavigation is absolutely necessary.

Not knowing from your profile where you are based, but it was installed in Brittany and Sole knowing what Katoema was to be used for, they gave me 2 complete sets of spares as part of mechanical stores.

Many thanks to all those who replied to my question concerning Sole diesel engines. Ihave had some useful feedback. One reply wanted some more information concerning my yacht. Burnaby is a vancouver 27 and currently has a Yanmar YSE12 engine. This is now past its best and I am seeking more power and have concluded that around 25 HP would be ideal. If anyone has installed a Sole engine or knows someone who has I would be pleased to have their views.

Many thanks

yes i have replaced a yanmar yse12 with a sole 17hp about 7 years ago, this is still going strong and they are a very good engine, fairways marine at maldon are the main dealers, but beware of there spare parts prices, very expensive, but there again no more than the extortionate prices that all marine engine delaers charge.as a matter of fact have you had a look at the isuzu marine engine, extremely good value at the moment, volspec are one of the dealers, try them for a good quote, i have just purchased a 33hp freshwater cooled, all the latest stuff for a very good price of £3200, try them.

I replaced my Yanmar YSM 12 with a Yanmar 2GM20F.

Straight replacement. No modification to bearers etc needed.

Perfectly happy with the new engine and in the last 3 years since installation has never missed a beat. Never.

Regards

Donald
