Hi all,

I have a 1999 Fairline Targa 43 with 2x Volvo Penta TAM74 engines (430hp), recently it would not start and the batteries were deemed to be the culprits.

We called out the local Volvo Penta service agents who also diagnosed an oil leak on the starboard engine. Since having it repaired the engines do not appear to have any power and do not rev over 2000rpm, also the port engine is smoking a lot and is dumping oil out of the exhaust - before the battery problem both were running very well and had only been serviced 8 hours previously............... any ideas?

Ref starboard engine, where was the oil leak from and what work was done to fix the leak?

Ref port engine and dumping oil out of exhaust, do you mean lube oil or diesel oil (surely the latter?)?

Do the engines start ok and run as smoothly as ever at tickover, or a bit lumpy?

Ok the invoice says - noticed oil leaking from around oil filter housing, attended vessel with a bora scope , run engine, noticed oil leaking from pipe between oil filter housingspossible two small leaks from bungs to main oil gallery.
Goes on to say: remove starbord engines by-pass oil filter housing, noticed link pipe in very poor condition, had to remove header tank to gain access refitted oil filter housing and new link pipe. Tightened bungs to main oil gallery.

Said engine run and tested for 30 mins - at tickover the engines are as smooth as they have always been just when accelerating there is no noise from the turbos and lots of black sooty smoke, also noticed an oily "slick" coming from the engine that has not been worked on through exhaust.

Both engines appear to have limited power......

We had just filled both tanks up prior to going out onto the open sea .....

I'd pull of the air cleaners and check the turbo spins freely, and also the exhaust bend and check the turbine side spins at the same time, as I have had a broken turbo shaft on one of these engines which gave the exact symptons you describe, the turbine had completely disappeared down the exhaust leaving just the compressor wheel spinning on half a shaft!
Its unlikely that both turbos would give trouble at the same time but thats where I would start seeing as you say there is no noise from the turbos, assuming you haven't picked up some duff fuel and the fuel filters are OK having just been serviced.

I agree with spannerman. I've had this three times now where the exhaust turbine of the turbo falls off. Remove air filter and exhaust elbow and check.
