Trying to find out what size, in micron, should the primary filter be my engine, Volvo MD22. Then what size should the pre filters be.

OK... I'll start.
My primary Racor filter/separator is 30 micron. The one on the engine is 10 micron!

The primary filter specified by VP is I believe a Bosch 1457434061. I don't know what micron rating that is, but most of the "equivalents" will be 10-15 microns. Why not just buy a VP filter or the Bosch filter?
Pre-filters should ideally be a higher micron rating, often 30 microns. There's a trade-off here; the less rubbish the pre-filter catches, the more the primary has to deal with.

Who knows what size in microns is Delphi HDF296? There is no such information on the filter nor in the box. Do I need additional disel filter except one I mentioned?

Just stick to the pukka HDF296, don't be tempted by the pattern equivalents (as told to me by a very competent diesel engineer who made good money from those wo didn't follow his advice)

Sounds from these replies like I could put one of my 10 micron cartridges in the racor (instead of the 30).. and be happy with a cleaner filter on the engine...

My Racor pre-filter/aglommerator is 10 micron. Had this setup for a couple of years and the Yanmar 3GM30F seems very happy with the fuel flow through the two filters.

I used to accept that coarse filter followed by fine made sense but thinking about it it must be nothing more than a way of spreading the filtration between two filters and one might alternatively have just one larger fine filter. Does that make sense? Maybe it depends upon the size distribution of the particles in the fuel. Another point - I've never heard of engines having two oil filters in series .. why not?

Although I have 2 HDF 296 7 micron filters in series on my Yanmar it is because I haven't been able to establish the part number of the pre-filter, which should i understand be about 30microns. It seems quite sensible to me to have a coaser pre filter which only takes out the larger particles and so prevents the primary filter from being overwhelmed but without unecessarily restricting the fuel flow.

The HDF 296, or the Fleetguard 167, or the Crossland 155 are supposedly 10 micron. The 296 says actually 7-8 microns
