Engine paint - primer ??

I have more than a few rust marks on my old Volvo MD11. I plan to wire brush down to bare steel, compressed air blow to clean up then several coats of primer and volvo green to finish off. I have the volvo green (which I am presuming will be high temperature capable. Does anyone have any recommendations for a suirtable high temperature primer ??? Thanks as always.

It might be worth looking in Halfords*, at least one of the larger branches. They do engine paint so they may have a primer or undercoat. You're are lucky to have the Volvo paint already. It is HORRENDOUSLY expensive. I used Hammerite (not normally one of my favourites) to smarten up an MD11C for an elderly friend.

The important thing is to get rid of all the rust first. Wire brush and scraper, even chipping hammer, followed by rust remover followed by more brushing and scraping followed by more rust remover etc untill all the rust has gone. You don't want to waste that Volvo paint by putting it on top of rust.

I've painted an engine and used standard one pack phosphate primer and quick drying enamel type gloss. If I did it again I would put more coats on both of primer and top coat. I think I would use a 2 pack paint next time as the overcoating and drying is more consistent.

It may pay to have a squint at the little drain cocks that are hidden below the exhaust manifold. I have just replaced an MD2 with another and on both engines the drain cocks were leaking causing rusting streaks down the block. Bunged some gasket sealer on them and they are fine now.

I'd use galvafroid as a primer, it's heat resistant, plus it will stop the rust or finnegans No:1 primer, kills rust and is heat resistant, its from the same folk as hammerite.
