engine out ,outdrive Versus shaft drive

On my Targa 31 any work required at the back of engines i.e outdrive end especially if it was to do with gearbox or crankshaft it was an engines out job, are there any jobs on a shaft driven boat that would warrant engines out assuming you could get around them ok?

when I open a post from you, my commection with the internet goes down and I am asked to reconnect. I have not disconnected and if I cancel the request I go to "work Offline". If I go to another post, the problem doesn't occur. Have I upset you??? its really weird.

I don't that the question can be answered definitively. With a smaller boat, it's always going to be easier to get the engine out, and same cd easily apply to a shaft driven boat as well, so that rather than ponce about trying to strip an engine in a squeezy area they can do the job properly in an egineering shop. The only time this might not apply is when the engine is so flippin massive (and the space around it is also massive) so taking the engine out wd be more of a problem than the (less) limited access.

With shafts you can 1. remove the gearbox. 2. remove the bellhousing and drive plate, 3. any work on the engine would be the same method whatever drive you have i.e. head job, oil changes, and all the rest, except for the regrind and rebore. you may or may not get away with crankshaft oilseals, or timing case seals. but all of these jobs will let you leave the boat in the water.
