can anyone recommend a suitable engine oil for my perkins 4108 . iemailed perkins and was told to use shell rimula x but i can't seem to find it anywhere,if anyone knows where it would be of help . also the gearbox oil any help?

Rimula X is the stuff and should be readily available as it is also used in road transport. Try a google search locally, not just in marine suppliers.

Buhk recommend Shell Rimula as well. I had a job to find any but eventually did at a motorway stop where trucks congregate. Otherwise contact Shell direct. Ordinary car type garages don't seem to stock it.
Good Luck.
I need more so post your experience.

yep, Rimula X does the biz. But at £18 per 4 litres in Aladdin's Cave? Surely not . . .

Have a source locally at much less. PM me if interested.

Rimula X is superb.

I believe Shell Direct was bought out by Emo Oils last year. So I now buy from Emo at 1:40/ltr. If you buy 100 ltrs +, delivery is free.

That is much the same advice as I got from an oil company's technical peeps - except they recommended their own oil /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif which I do use (they have been so helpful, would feel guilty otherwise). Our own engine (a Volvo) manual states CD of single grade (SAE 30 from memory).

They said for light marine diesels just use a multigrade of whatever the current oil is on the shelf for normal light diesel road vehicles and don't worry about it (they had no need to say that, they were big enuff to have supplied me with whatever was best) (think their current oil is API CF if I remember correctly from last change).
