Hi All
Sorry if this has been done to death, not able to find any information using the search facility on here,

Currently using Shell rimula RT4X, 15w/40 mineral engine oil, for our Volvo TAMD122P-D engines

Seem to remember reading on here that there was more than one type or spec now ( 4/5) anyone no which one was

Recommended , and which one to avoid ,supplier states it now has new Shell Rimula RT4X on barrel

Thanks

The manual states CD or CE spec oil at 15W/40 viscosity so any that meet this requirement will do.

These days CD and CE have become obsolete but CF is the recommended sucessor

See pg 88:

I'd recommend any known brand (not neccessarily major), mineral oil. And ofcourse changed according to the manual intervals. You may also look up Volvo VDS/VDS-2 specification and get that spec oil, if you so desire - again any known brand that meet the standard.

Thanks guys

My confusion is between Shell Rimula RT4X and Shell Rimula RT4L both specifications seem to meet our engine

requirements , the X ,Heavy duty Diesel engine oil , the L , Multigrade Heavy duty engine oil ,

Recommends the use of RT4L for low emission engines, including the latest Euro 5 and US 2007, as well as older units
Recommends RT4X for low emission engines Euro 5,4,3,2 and US 2002
RT4X. Volvo VDS-3
RT4L . Volvo VDS-3 /VDS-4

As our engines are older than the Euro spec , looking at using RT4X spec oil

Correct.

L is a low ash version for newer machinery.

Good points being raised here, only just this week supplier was perversely flagging special deals on normally more expensive low SAPS lubricants.

Top ring temperatures on older engines are generally not compatible with low ash oils.

I just purchased 6off Shell Rimula RT4X 15W-40 x 20L @ £40.50 from BTLS, which I will be taking out to Sant Carles on Tuesday. I use this for my TAMD63P's and it can also be used in the ZF gearboxes.
