Engine oil for Yanmar 4JH2 HDTE

Yanmar recommends API CD, but that is pretty much extinct - even in France these days.

I talked to the local garage when I asked for Shell Rimula C, they said that is not made any more and asked if it was for an old lorry.

Anyway, their recommendation is Shell Helix Diesel HX5 15W-40 which us API CF, ACEA A2/B2 as the best for old diesels.

What does the expert panel think?

any mineral 15 > 40 diesel engine oil will do
 
I saw Shell Diesel oil to API CD in a French hypermarket in August 2010, so it does exist.

If not readily available it would seem that the Helix HX5 is a reasonable substitute. The portfolio link on this page gives a good guide. You might need to be careful with the increased detergency of this oil as it will remove sludge accumulations that an API CD oil might not. Keep an eye on oil pressure and maybe check the filter soon after changing the oil.

I think I remember seeing Shell Diesel C back then too. But all my local hypermarkets, don't have it any more.

May be there is stock left in some of the places with less turnover. There is a super market own brand which is API CD, which is less than half the price of the cheapest Shell oil. There is nothing from Shell, Elf, Total, Castrol etc which is API CD.

Who knows what is in the supermarket own brand. It might be good - or it could be some left over stuff from China.

The way these cheap brands are made up is that the producer buys base oil from any of the major producers, then buys an additive package from one of several companies. For an old and relatively simple package like API CD the product could well be very similar to that of a major. One potential problem is compatibility - if topped up with somebody else's oil to the same spec there might be a reaction.
 
OK I know this is an old thread but as I've just acquired a new boat with this engine and I have 75 litres of the oil below, I'm hoping it's just superceded the API CD one mentioned.

I have Diesel Long Drain Mineral Engine Oil with the following specs:

SHPD API CH-4/SL
ACEA B3, B4, E3, E5, E7, A3

Does the collective feel that this would be OK in the Yanmar 4JH2-DTE?

That's great Sailorman. a useful set of specs in an easy to read format, thank you, seems like I'm going to be ok with this oil.

This argument has come up so frequently that it is now becoming boring. Yacht engines and car engines are not the same! The oil specifications refer to automotive practice, in which excluding the various changes to design such as EGR, reductions in fuel sulphur content and other factors, the actual use of the engines has changed totally in the 60 years covered by those specifications. Oil temperatures, drain intervals, materials of construction and dozens of other factors are catered for in the API specs. And how much has the operation of your boat's engine changed since the original oil was specified? Not a bit.
 
Bog standard 15W-40 MINERAL diesel oil.

NOT semi-synthetic and NOT fully synthetic


3.1.2 Lube oil
(1) Selection of Engine Lube Oil Use the following lube oil:
*API Classification CD (Standards of America Petroleum Institute)
*SAE Viscosity 15W40 (Standards of Society of Automotive Engineering)

NOTICE: Using other than the specified lube oil will lead to seizure of parts inside the engine and gear device , abnormal wear, and shorten engine life. It will also effect the starting ability and power output.

I guess its hard to accept that an older less protecting oil is actually better for the engine, even if that is the case.

I've some shell Rimula R4x 15w40 fully synthetic diesel oil sat in the garage, and Its taken all my will power to leave that in the container and fill the 1gm with Asda's own instead.
 
My thoughts exactly, looks like I might have to go to ASDA then and stick the other oil on Ebay. Seems OKin the Ford 2715e's I got it for originally, oh well :-(
