Engine oil extractor pumps

The football shaped Pela I have came with 3 attachments ( apart from the pump!); The extraction hose, the pouring nozzle and a blank cap/ seal. I drilled the blank cap to accept a threaded adaptor (held in place with a nut inside the cap), to which the ball valve is screwed. The other end of the ball valve has a hose barb for the 1/4" ID flex hose. The other end of the hose goes onto another hose barb, which is attached to the rigid pipe; just measuring it again, it is 1/2" OD, not 5/8". The other end of the rigid pipe has a reducer, into which a short length of flexible pneumatics hose (1/4" OD) is attached with a nut/ olive. The combination of the rigid pipe with the short flexible end allows it to be easily placed where it's needed; I fitted the ball balve so the chamber could be kept under "vacuum" until the end of the pipe was where I wanted it to be; then I could just open the ball valve, rather than losing vacuum when trying to position the pipe.

Well guys, thanks for your responses. It seems that the pela gets the majority of the votes. I dug out my old vacumm pump that I discarded some years ago becauase it would take in excess of an hour to clear 3 litres,and find that it was in fact a pela sperical unit. So pherhaps it had a fault or just worn out. I note that Danny Jo had the same problems with his elecric pump as me. It looks like I am going to buy a new Pela or equivalent at the week end.

I have a small electric jabsco type impeller pump which has been excellent.

Had it with the boat from the previous owner 4 years ago, same impeller, it's been absolutely fine.

For ease of use I mounted it in a wooden box with 1/2" hose permanently attached, and a switch, and have used it for all sorts of liquids - oil changes, bilge water, diesel, all excellent and effortless.

Obviously the pumping speed varies with viscosity, but when all you have to do is press a switch and wait, what's the problem? Priming is only an issue if you're trying to make it do the impossible - cold EP90 up a 1 metre head for example!

Important to clean it out after use though to prolong impeller life. I wouldn't have a manual pumping thing - sounds too much like hard work. 2x 9L Oil changes take just a few minutes!

I have been using a Pela, vacuum pump for years and it is excellent. Mine is the cylindrical one; I don't know if it is better or worse that the spherical one. I think that the only difference is capacity.

The actual pumping mechanism is different (ie better) in the 'vertical' one which mainly accounts for its increased price. That may also account for the failures some people have experienced with the spherical model.
