Engine Oil 1GM10

Well, this is what the Yanmar Manual says, but not really too helpful:

"SAE new classification CB grade or CD grade fuel(??) having suitable
viscosity for the atmospheric temperature must be used in this engine"

So, really, any cheap mineral oil, SAE 10 to 40 should do:D

Bought some ROCK Oil 10w40 for our 3YM20. Must say after using SHELL Nautilus from new the engine is now very quiet :) Just don't go near anything that says Synthetic or Semi Synthetic

I'm not sure when CB was new, well over half a century ago, I would think. CD became obsolete in about 1990 but was produced until quite recently.

In my manual for a 2GM20 it states that the gear oil that should be used is the same as the engine oil. I think this was for 1GMs as well.
I thought that was a bit weird and am going to put SAE 30 in.

Please do not be confused with correct oil and cheap oil. Cheap oil may well be wrong, just because it is cheap does not make it the right grade.

If you want to take the trouble, API CD oil is still available. I bought some in France just recently, its not easy to come by, but you can get it in supermarkets. Only a couple of years ago several of the major brands sold API CD oil in France, but alas no longer. I posted this on another thread just after new year:

"Last year I had to report that it seemed that API CD oil was no longer available in the supermarkets in France, in Carrefour anyway. When I was over in France over the new year I found that Intermarche sell an unbranded API CD oil, but in Brico Marche an API CD oil is sold branded as Valco, the 5 ltr pack was around 9 Euros."

Out of interest, I had email traffic with Morris of Shrewsbury over API CD oil, they stopped it because the canal boat folks complained it was too good! They wanted API CC, which Morris sell. I did a quick Google and sent some stats to Morris's showing that the number of canal boats pales into insignificance when compared to the number of 'real' boats. We wait to see the outcome. I believe they are missing an easy marketing opportunity.

:confused::confused::confused:

I suggest you do just what the manual says. Monogrades are fine in many engines but your gearbox would prefer to have just a bit more additive in its lubricant. A multigrade 15W/40 would be a better choice.

I tried Morris's for some transmission oil for my Seagull - EP140 or something. I needed 1/4 pint, Morris's only supply in massive drums. So I had to get mine from Shrewsbury Marine who buy one of said massive drums.

not sure about that I have yet to find expensive API CD oil! as of 8 weeks ago it was available in Carrefour in Chambery, Tescos sell it, motor factors sell it under the Comma brand, Wilkinsons and Lidl all sell a 15/40 oil that meets the requirement BUT Lidl also sell a synthetic that should not be used.

gearbox: you have be a bit careful with yanmar gearbox lub oil, they are not all the same, some are same as engine others are not - heed the manual or look here

edit: the above site is a good resource for all things engine and transmission

Well, you've done a better job than me in sourcing the stuff. I tried 4 large Carrefour outlets and could not find any. And you'll have to tell me more about the Comma API CD, there is nothing on the web site.

Yes API CF is very much widely available and is the closest replacement to API CD. However, it is API CD which is was referring too, not a 'close as'. If you travel to France, take a look in the places I suggested.
