I'm trying to find the above for my 1985 2003. The plate on the front of the engine has one four digit number with the number 2003 above. The reason that I would like this number is that I would like to see if this engine is likely to suffer the famous gearbox spline problem. (Yes, I know that I could dismantle and check, but I'm being lazy). Apparently, engine numbers post 2300059128 should be OK, but as I've said, my engine number is nothing like this. Can anyone offer advice?

Well my 1988 boat had a lower number and on inspection the splines on both the gearbox shaft and the carrier ring on the flywheel were very worn. My mate did his 1985 one too. So the answer is to look.

Ours is fitted in a 1989 Moody, can't rememer the serial numbers but was within the range. However took the box out back in Oct to have a look. The splines weren't bad but after 19 years and 1500 hours they were starting to wear so took the decision to have the modification done. It's now £400 when you include the VAT and postage etc. So was it worth it, well the rest of the engine seems fine so hoping to get a good few more years out of it yet. Changed to volvo seal at the same time which was a good move and now have a dry engine bilge. There is only one way you are going to know the answer, get her lifted and get the spanners out.

[/ QUOTE ]Engine numbers post 2300059128 were fitted with a cushioned drive system. This started in, I think, 1991 so your engine is certainly likely to have excess spline wear. My 1990 engine didn't have the cushioned drive, and I retrofitted it using the Volvo kit.

I've just had my 2003 / 120se saildrive modified as the splines were absolutely crackered... just as the photos in the above link. So pleased I'd found it when on the hard for the winter and not when it gave way in a blow off Oostende!

I came across it when I had to dismantle things to replace the saildrive gator as per volvo's dictat.

Well worth checking in my opinion... the wear problem is very real. My saildrive was only 7 years old but had obviously been fitted to an already part worn drive plate. If only the boatyard had thought further than their nose... ho hum

Pete,
have a look at my latest post on the WOA site concerning the Hex mod plastic/poly bushes (3rd/4th/5th photos) that the hex head bolts go into.

Of the 8 fitted, 7 were badly worn and only one had slight wear. All 8 have now been replaced.

I could see that it was probably the knurled sides of the hex head bolts that have caused the wear. Wear was on one side of the bushes - possibly on the drive direction.

I would now advise anyone who has had the Hex mod to check these bushes for wear.

DB Marine supplied bushes of a "different" material (their description) at £3 each plus VAT and P&P.

Phil thanks. hat is a bit worrying But for the fact the engine had to come out you may not have found that. I have asked DB Marine some questions, however we had to look and see how bad it was and having taken the gearbox out you may as well go ahead.
