Engine morse control - worn splines?

We had to replace the throttle cable on our 10 year old Yanmar last year.

When swapping them over the engineer pointed out that the splines holding the throttle lever were very worn. Can't understand how this could be the case but they definitely are worn.

Last weekend the lever was slipping. Tightened up the grub screw but slipped slightly again when coming in.

Would be nasty if level slipped when parking and failed to engage reverse.

Anybody come across this issue? Wondered if possible to drill hole and replace grub screw with bolt. Or is it necessary to replace the whole mechanism?

I had this on the model with the cast grey body and chromed handle. Ours just wore out as it was used quite heavily over many years. In my case I assumed that the steel handle was harder than the spline shaft material. I remember thinking that it was a stupid design and should be the other way around. But yes, they wear out.

On that particular boat we replaced the whole unit with a more modern one and moved it to the pedestal from the cockpit side. I dont think drilling and through bolting would be a good solution as the shaft is not designed for that method of fastening i.e. collet or tapered.

On a bathroom tap I repaired a spline with tin foil. Wrapped a single layer around the spline and then fitted the tap handle over the foil wrapped spline.

Good luck.

I've had the same issue on my 1979 HR 352 with old Volvo Penta morse throttle lever. Someone has modded it by threading through a bolt. Problem was is difficult to locate hole in splined shaft - solved by my engineering mate putting a cone on end of bolt. However you might prefer a new unit!....

the bolt idea would have to be drilled on the edge of the spline as the center is used for the neutral button.

also it helps if you clean out the splines on the lever with a sharp chisel they corrode and then dont fit well after.

Is it one like this?

I had to replace my teleflex throttle assembly when I bought my boat a few years ago. I replaced the complete unit. You can buy just the handle from ASAP supplies if it's just the splines on the handle that are worn but it's about £40. The complete unit cost me about £75 but they seem a lot more expensive now.

Don't know if I would try a repair, I'd want to be confident it's not going to slip when berthing in a tight situation.

Clean all traces of oil and dirt from the handle spline and the spline on the throttle body. Then very lightly oil the spline on the throttle body and I mean lightly. The use some plastic metal on the handle's spline - not too thick and then bring the two together and leave for a good while before using it.

I had just the opposite problem. The splines were jammed, siezed solid and the handle could not be removed.
I replaced the whole unit, bought it on-line for about £90 (I think it was). Fitting was relatively simple.

Thanks very much for the suggestions. Will investigate further

Any idea what make of lever this is and/or supplier so I can research replacement prices and sources - logo looks like it could be a TFX symbol

Teleflex

you might find it here

It may be a 700ss type with a fancy cover. the internals look the same as mine which is a 700ss but I can only see one cable on yours. Is it the throttle or gear linkage?

Fantastic thanks. Yes certainly is the Teleflex logo and the 700ss lever looks the same - but mine in a different case.

Well spotted re just one cable. Must have taken the internal photo when the throttle cable was off when it broke - just as about to enter Crinan Sea Lock. (fortunately not in the canal when looking for stopping power)

Thanks again all for the help

An update - very fast and helpful support from Teleflex, who referred me to their UK agent Bainbridge Marine. In response to the photos they identified this as a Teleflex TX172103 unit and forwarded to Force 4 who stock it. Very fast and efficient service. Thanks guys.

in the meantime I have stripped the current unit, cleaned the remaining splines as carefully as possible and filed a flat spot to try to give the locating screw more chance. Will see how it goes before embarking on a full replacement.

Thanks for the advice and contacts
