Engine lubrication oil test lab?

Contact Richard Marland at The Oil Lab, 2, Little Orchard gardens, Rugeley WS15 2ES, Tel 07050257431.

What is the purpose of the test ? are you looking to find something specific or just to see how the oil has faired over the season.

As used by the RNLI

£6.60 should do the trick. You will get a sample bottle and tube, questionaire and return post and packaging. The result comes in about a week. Don't make the mistake of buying the kit from the guy who advertises in PBO. For £30.00 the only added value is a (single) rubber glove and a bit of Tippex over the above lab details (I am reliably informed that Finnings bought a 'PBO' kit, submitted a sample, had it sent back to them for analysis, despatched the results, and received them sometime later, complete with Tippex!).

Finnings are a Catterpillar dealer, test the RNLI samples and those from many haulage fleets and plant engines the size of a house, a director is a yachtsman I understand.

It is recommended to take a baseline sample after about 30 mins on the new oil, then a further sample at oil change time.

The lab will advise on a whole range of issues based on contaminents including:

Over fuelling

Poor combustion

Internal leaks

Poor filtration (air intake)

Bearing wear

Cylinder wear

Poor compression

Valve wear

etc etc etc.

You can't buy that much in the chandlers for under a tenner can you!

Pardon my asking but.....

... I am intrigued as to what you are looking for.

Has this been suggested by some "authority" or "expert"

As a rough (very rough) guide:-

If its black then it needs changing.

If it looks like gold paint your bearings are knackered

If it's the colour of army uniforms it has water in it.

If it's clear then all is well.

PS

Yes I have used this service.

Firstly before I bought a yacht with 4500 hours on the (non-original) hour meter.

The analysis gave much more info. than any engineer could.

I also sample the oil each oil change time.

Thank you for your very full reply

I will certainly give it a try and at that price I think it could prove money well spent for early warning of a problem.
