Hi,
Does any one buy engine insurance to cover major engine failures?
Would seem to me to be a good idea with say an excess of £2,000 if the cost is reasonable..
What should you expect to pay on say an engine of five years old and 500 hours?

I have never read anywhere that you can insure a boat engine for failure.... ?

If I were in that business it would be very hefty premiums!

Do you have any links to companies that do this?

a 5 year old engine with 500 hours is pretty normal use. with regular maintenance a leisure boat engine should last 2500 - 5000 hours as long as you look after it. I doubt you will get engine insurance but if concerned you can have engine surveys done and oil analysis tests to determine internal engine condition.

Best thing to do is if it is running well now give it good use, keep it serviced, protect it in the winter months and don't worry. Spend your potential premium on good maintenance. Warm it (them) up properly before going fast and do everything nice and smoothly so you don't put shock loads through the engines and gearboxes etc.

If I only got 5000 hrs from my engine I would go back to wind. I expect at least 10000 if looked after. I have friends with the old Lehman engines that have 15000 and more and are still going strong.

Clean air
Clean Fuel
Clean oil and your engine should last a long time.

There Iv'e said it now :(

Yes, for me its called an annual service by an engineer & a mid season oil change and regular level checks by me

if its decent engine in the first place, a 5yr old engine with 500 hrs is just about run in, keep it maintained well and as others have said, it should go on for many thousands of hours. I do not believe anyone offers aftermarket boat engine warranties on 5yr + engines... but I may well be wrong, there's always a first time ;)
