Thanks everyone

I will look into more and get some independent advice :)

Kevin,

You should try VolvoPaul on the Motorboat Forum, or ping him a PM. He will give you the right advice.

I do not know these engines personally, but there may be some significant service items at 500hrs or 5 years. If the engines have cam belts rather than chains, these will need changing, but I cannot think of anything that will require the engine to be lifted out and stripped.

And I suppose you believe in Santa Claus too
Aircraft engines possibly as they tend to fall out of the sky upon engine failure.

Yes it Is correct that some passenger carrying vessels are subject regular inspection with liners being removed etc .
Some twin screw vessels have a spare engine which is used in rotation to allow strip down without putting the vessel out of service.

Thanks. I was beginning to doubt myself!

A really good way to get completely independent advice would be to take oil samples from both engines and gearboxes and have them analysed.

There can be no debate after that.

Unless you are in the habit of revving a cold engine above 2,000 rpm to prove that it works, before the oil is warm, regular oil, filter and belt changes should take you way beyond 500 hours.

I own a Sessa 34 which is based in Mallorca and I've had since new (2003) The boat has two Volvo Penta KAD43 Z Drive engines which have been serviced every year in accordance with the Volvo Schedule and the books stamped.

The Engines have done just under 500 hours each and never missed a beat in the last 8 years.

I am being told that both engines require a 'full inspection' and they must remove both engines and take them apart to replace many parts.

500 hours is just about run in.
The equivalent of less than 25,000 miles in a car.

You have looked after the legs and engines with very regular services.
'Never missed a beat' - If there was some serious issue surely you would have recognised it ?
What has led to the recommendation for the engines to be rebuilt? Has a fault been found during service?

My own Volvo Penta (Kad32) engine has done the same hours as yours, 500 hours. And almost the same age , a 2002 boat. I just had the leg and engine serviced in October by a VP agent, as it has been for the last few years.
