Yeh! Chris., tell them how kind I am, look how I am the heaviest smoker on the planet but never smoke around you. I always send you out in the rain before I light a fag. /forums/images/icons/wink.gif

Tony, you gotta look behind the face to see. Go down in the engine room, close the hatch on yourself, you can read a book from the light filtering through the hull. Check the engine stringers, see how they have a tendency to splinter. Don't put a pressure washer to close to the side... it will punch a hole.
Look at the looms, compare internals with the quality of your boat. I could go on and on.... but, I intend voicing no more opinions. The subject is closed as far as I am concerned.
(Early ones like the 33 and 25 were OK).

Steve:
Agree with the others. 2000hrs is not a lot if well maintained (esp correct oil changes). These are truck engines, max 2500rpm mostly, cruising 2200rpm. With correct oil, wear rates are tiny. If the engine was in a bus, 2000 hours is about 6months. Buses do not have engine rebuilds at 6 months. In a lorry, its perhaps 75000 miles, again nowhere near the knackered stage (which is more like 300,000 + miles).

Agree with others, correct approach is talk to owner or yard and see service history. Start them from cold to be sure no noises. Run them flat out and see they get to correct full rpm at full load ie pushing the boat. Get an oil analysis if you want (can post an address, it costs about £30). If you have any suspiciaons after that, you or an engine survey bod could do a compr test and look inside with a boroscope, but that's probably OTT and unnecessary.

I agree you should pay relatively more attention to the rest of the boat and its kit, as you could find more needs fixing there which could cost £££, unless it has been well maintained

Yep - I gotta give you credit for all sorts of consideration. 'Cos I'm a wheezy old git, you always send me outside when you want to smoke, always push me up to the bar in front of you, always......./forums/images/icons/smile.gif

I bought the TS37 because the build quality was better than anything else of a similar price. Down to small things like door stops, and locks etc. Things other brands missed. The GRP is as good as any other boat I've seen, certainly can't see light through it!!! (foam core). She is very seaworthy and has looked after us for many nm. I'd recommend one to anyone.

Buy my Fletcher please!!!!!

See! pushing you up to the bar first, so you have something to lean on. It doesn't make sense for you to be there and not get the jars in while you are there.

Re: What is a Engine Hour??

Now having a engine which registers the 'engine hours' Whats is an 'engine hour'?
I thought that one engine hour = one hour 'time'. but checking two engine hours (registered) = one hour 'timed'.

Re: What is a Engine Hour??

an hour is an hour so if your engine hour clock is taking two hours to clock an hour its knackered.

I just can't be arsed...

Re:Steve H

Steve my friend uses a TS37 as a school boat which is on its second set of engines Mercruiser 180hp (think the first ones where also hard worked BMW's)they have clocked up over 3000hrs.

Because of the high hrs each week its gets its oil and filters changed every month (prob about 100hrs) which is crucial. So far no probs.

As regards the boat itself, (I did my ICC on it with the school) yes its not up there with the BO hulls, and does twitch a bit and roll a bit like most semi dis hulls, but also does the job its designed to do.
Accomodations fine though it did'nt have any net curtains (sob)

Re: High V Low

On this subject there is an add in Dec MBY classifieds from a company selling off their two Sunseeker 34 hawks as their getting new in 2003

So two more or less identical boats, ~ both 1998 ~ one with new 300hp Yanmars 50 hrs for £115k, and the second one with, I assume the original, 300hp Yanmars with 110hrs port 750 hrs stb ?? for £70k thats 39% less .

Re: High V Low

Does'nt say ex vat but anyway point is the vast diference between the two prices based it seems on engine hrs. Thought that might invite further debate given this thread has been very lively so far

Re: Your mate must be.....

Yes its Crystal Rapide, the guy could be an earlier owner Steve Flood ?? an RYA examiner or Mike who now runs the school.
