Can anyone help please?
I'm thinking about buying a 2 year old Beneteau, but one thing concerns me a little. It's got 400 hours on the engine. Allowing for three sailing seasons since new, this feels a little high. What do you pundits think?.... and ... what's the suggested service interval. It's a 29hp Volvo btw. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Oh...and one other thing... would you always have a survey done? regardless of the age?

A well used engine is a good thing by me !

Maybe not much wind about? All the sailors we have met in holland told me that they motored across ! allthought they had sails?

Also pepole will run thier engines to charge battries and heat water up for a shower!

I would have a survey every time ! you can always knock the price down with the findings and there is always a discovery !

I would have a survey done every time, lost £500 on survey and haul out a couple of years ago but could have cost me upwards of £5000.
I ended up buying a ten year old boat with 2000 hours on and she is as sweet as a nut, saying that, I don't know if 2000 hours is alot.
I suppose service interval would depend on use or annualy although I am no mechanic.

I would say that 400 hours is not excessive. If it is an ex charter boat you can expect more hours as the hirer will try to get as far as possible for his money and then have to rush back under engine to hand over. Some charter companies include a tank of fuel in the price to encourage engine, rather than sail use.

Over three to six months liveaboard a year I do around 100 hours.

If the oil change proceedure is the same as my 2020, and I would expect it to be, it will be every 100 hours. I recommend you you change the gearbox oil when you get it as it may not have been done and it would be good to get the manufacturing dirt out as soon as possible.

Most marine engines don't wear out with use they die of neglect. If you had a car with a diesel engine in it assuming an average speed of 40 mph (which is probably high) your 400 hours would be equal to 16,000 miles or 5333 miles per annum. Relax. its only just run in!

Well we have a four year old Bav 34 with the 2030 (29hp) and it is now in excess of 2,000 hours propobally in better nick now than when it was new -just keep changing the oil and filter .
(the log has done an incredible number of miles too so we don't motor all the time )
