The LCD display of my Volvo 2020 engine hour meter has ceased working . It spent some months flashing partially activated numbers but always settled down after a while. Now it displays nothing. The rest of the engine controls/monitors work fine....it starts, alarms function, fuel & rev counter work. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif Any clues?

They are nototious for it, nowt you can do, its caused by damp, the numbers keep going up even tho you cant see em, I have resurrected them for a short time by taking them apart and using a hair dryer to get working, it doesnt usually last long tho!

Like Lot's I've lost patience with mine now have a digital readout in the engine bay. bought from RS for about £15 wired directly of the alt.

If the airing cupboard/hairdryer doesn't work, there was a cheapo replacement explained in by Dick Holness in Sailing Today June 2007 pages 138 to 140. This used a £15 replacement LCD hours meter from RS Components - part number 185-7087.

Don't know if ST do copies of old articles. Wiring was very simple (4 wires -
1) positive (to show display),
2) negative (return),
3) positive only on when engine running (to count up hours), and
4) (labelled R) (probably not required for these purposes) momentary positive to zero the unit.

Agree, a week in the airing Cupboard.

Why can't Volvo make them for marine use and work!!

The price they charge they should!

I wouldn't even bother trying to fix as the problem will reoccur.

I gave up in the end and installed separate counter as suggested by some of these posts.

Don't even bother going to Volvo unless you have a very healthy bank account.

Mine has gone and I plan a week in the airing cupboard. My question is, is it possible then to spray the unit with something that repells water. Has anyone tried this and if so, was it successful?

Basically no, I've not heard of any lasting solution to the problem. Sometimes the airing cupboard doesn't fix it either, I'm afraid.

Even living in the Medditarean with warm wheather the engine hour meter of my VP2030 works only, sometimes, in the summer. Or I better say, only displays because it does work. I installed a second one myself.

Like many, I had this problem, and have fitted the hour meter described above. A little piece of advice, if it helps...

It is definitely worth putting the unit in your airing cupboard, to get it working even for a short while. Once you have an idea of your hours on a certain date, religiously record the times you use your engine, so that when you come to fit it, you can have it displaying your true number of hours, rather than "0000.0".

It is a simple process, described in the article.
