The engine hour meter on our Volvo Penta MD 2020 has failed after just 5 years.

Can anyone suggest a reliable make. The Volvo one had an LCD display which behaved erraticly before it failed. Would a mechanical display be a more reliable replacement?

ASAP sell ones by Faria Marine Instruments - are they good quality?

That's what they do, they don't like damp. Take the meter off and blow dry it with a hairdryer or fan heater or leave it in the airing cupboard a few days and abracadabra you will have all your hours back, none lost, just invisible and all FOC.

Otherwise add a second new mechanical hour meter from ASAP or Vetus.

I have the same problem.

I will give it a try but has anyone found a way of keeping the water out- someone with more expertise than Volvo that is? I am surprised that they still sell them knowing this problem - but then it was the same company that had the coupling problem but failed to admit it.

Had the same problem. Took meter out and dried it at home, put it back in and it worked for a while then failed again. So I fitted a mechanical one from VDO.

I heven't tried spraying the meter with a "sealant" yet, but maybe I will give it a try when time and energy permits! I bought an electronic board sealant at LIBS a couple of years ago which was advertised as being able to withstand a TV being dunked in water and then switched on directly afterwar, so ahould be watertight - don't remember the name though.

Alan I don't think that stuff would be a good idea sprayed onto an LCD display, this is the bit the damp gets to, not the electrical bits.

Take your point but I was thinking about spraying onto the connector part ........
may give it a go anyway, as mine only works part time !!!

I know the summer is over when the Volvo engine hour meter packs up, and that spring has arrived when it resumes normal service.
