Thinking of re-engineing our Prout Snowgoose, does anyone have any experience of Lombardini 30hp, current old engine is 21hp Yanmar 3GM10, toss up between a new Yanmar 3GM30 which is 29hp or a Lombo? or even a rebuild on the old one/forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Multihulls, still the best

When I looked at the 35hp range, the beta was a strong contender even on weight (although nanni is somewhat lighter for same engine due to not having a smoothing plate) I seem to remember that some of the weights were quoted as bare engine and dry, whereas others include the gearbox and appropriate fluids - sounds like this might be the case here so suggest you check. Other advantage of the beta is that they can supply with a kit to make use of existing engine bearers.

Ok thanks for that. Any thoughts on silencing and exhausts, the original has a long flexible pipe that goes under the engine forwards, up then back out through a rubber cone muffler, very noisy and cumbersome , also depends on the exhaust side of the engine, current engine exhaust manifold is on the stbd and the exhaust outlet thru the transom is also stbd?

Cant help you on that one as I dont own a prout yet (next planned upgrade), and have not had to do any exhaust work with existing engine (diesel outboard!)

Would really recommend trying to get it as silent as posible, as personally hate having the engine on because of its intrusive nature.

A diesel outboard ! now there`s a thing- there can`t be many of those around. Doesn`t it shake its mountings off? What make, model, if you don`t mind me asking.

Thanks, good luck in your search for a Prout, we came from a Heavenly Twin, terrific boat but the old Snowgoose is just luxury, 11.6 knots broad reach the other day, Studland to Yarmouth in 2 hrs, couldn't do that in dear old Doneta! If you see us in the harbour give us a shout, "Chocolate Goose" MCRV3 Mike

Re: engine for Proutre:talbot

hasn't so far and its 12 years old. Yanmar 27 hp. Ultra long shaft and hydraulic tilt. They are still available but are impossibly expensive cause they are all hand built.

Re: engine for Proutre:talbot

Have seen Chocalate Goose several times over the last few weeks. My Catalac is the only one with a big solar panel on the back, so will keep a look out for you.

Re: engine for Proutre:talbot

For what it's worth, my Snowgoose has a 3HM30. The exhaust is on the starboard side, goes aft, crosses to port, goes forward through a vetus trap thing then exits through the post side of the nacelle.
Propels us at a decent speed, and isn't too noisy, although there is a lot of insulation in there.

Had much the same layout on my Quest. Had I not sold it, I intended to fit a Halyard water lift silencer since I was convinced that much of the noise and vibes came from the exhaust pipe lying on the bottom of the nacelle. A new engine would make this easier in that an exhaust outlet on the opposite side of the engine to the transom hole for the exhaust would make the run a better one.

I think I would try a Beta too, particularly if I could get a 4 cylinder in.

I'd make sure the drive leg is (a) up to the extra power and bigger prop and (b) the proposed engine will mate to it before making the decision.

I'd certainly go for the bigger power. We weigh a bit less than a snowgoose and have 2 x 3GM.

Re: engine for Proutre:talbot

Sorry I'm late but I'm in the US. Have a Prout 31 Quest and need to repower. Previous owner removed inboard and installed 15 hp Honda ob. Works ok on a sled on the stern but am considering installing a Yanmar D27 where old Sonic drive was located (after beefing up the stern and creating a waterproof locker. What has been your experience with your D27? Thanks...clyde

thought the 32hp a bit heavy 170kg against yan 133, lom115

[/ QUOTE ]Just stumbled on your posting... FWIW:what about the 28hp Beta? Dry weight of 28hp = 150Kg, 35hp = 170Kg.

Re: engine for Proutre:talbot

The only reason you can be considering this is if you have access to a secondhand
Ultra long leg D27. The engine is superb, however there are drawbacks.

The alternator has only 10 amps of charge.
The gearbox is designed for pushing a small prop quickly so that it is ideal for a rib, a cat really needs a larger prop being turned more slowly.
In order to be able to lift the engine out of the water, the box you design will need some access, thus the engine noise cannot be quietened, and it is noisy.
The power curve is very different from an inboard engine, and requires max revs to achieve max power - fine on a rib, but you need to get the right prop to be able to spin the engine up to the full speed.
It is ****** expensive.

If I had an engine compartment already set up for a sonic drive I would not consider changing, the only reason I went for the D27 was that my boat was already fitted with an outboard, and the stern arrangements were not good for a sonic without major surgery.

A new beta and a new sonic will cost abt half the price of a new D27
