I have just found this website www.yachtboatparts.com www yachtboatparts com
seems they have filters for most Volvo Penta engines and impellers
not using cheap Sierra copies either, I hate those sierra and fram filters they feel so light and tinny
Apparently they are using the company that supplies filters to Volvo Penta.
Spoke to a chap there and he sounded like he Knew alot about Volvo Engines
After fitting non Volvo filters (Fram) last year for the first time in many trouble free years servicing engines, I will not be doing that again. Not ever!
I had a thread posted at the time expressing how they fell off and poured about 120 litres of fuel all over the engines and into the engine room, which nearly resulted in a friggin fire and/or death by carbon monoxide poisoning. Fortunately neither happened, but I still had to be towed back to the marina and I spent hours cleaning it all up.
Inspections by various people, which included experienced mechanics concluded that the threads were badly made and not compatible despite the correct match. We compared them with the originals and we could see small differences in the threads. These were Fram filters and I made the mistake of returning them to Fram for inspection. Needless to say Fram said their filters are build to the highest standards bla bla and denied any responsibility saying they had not been fitted correctly. Aye right! I have fitted dozens of these things without a single failure or problem whatsoever. So I fit their filters and two fall off at the same time on two separate engines!! What's the chances of that happening? Maybe I could have made a mistake on one engine, but two? Almost no chance. They fell off because they were substandard filters IMHO.
Although Fram made lots of sympathetic noises, they didn't even offer replacement filters. Actually they did offer replacement filters after I dropped a subtle hint that their customer service was like their filters, poor quality. That said, there is no chance any of their products would get near my boat so I didn't take up their offer. I just bought a full set of Volvo filters, fitted them as normal and had trouble free engines since. I will never ever fit Fram filters again. Might fit Fleetguard as they seem ok, but in the case of critical filters I will only fit genuine parts. At the end of the day filters costs buttons compared to the cost of berthing/fuel etc..... and engines! It's just not worth the very small saving IMHO.
So did these filters literally drop off, ie the pressure pushed them off by overcoming the thread hold/grip ...or did they unscrew and thus the sealing washer didn't hold or was not thick/tough enough? I, like others, have fitted many many filters to cars, bikes, boats etc and have never had an issue apart from a seep perhaps where a seal didn't sit flat or something. I am just curious to what you think the failure was?
