I've often thought that a flow switch in the coolong water supply would be a good idea. Anybody know of a suitable unit that would give a warning when cooling water is lost. This would be much better than waiting for the engine to overheat.

Also look in the RS or Farnell catalogue - about £20. Farnell no is 730-890. Douglas Randall FS2, or from CT Platon Ltd. in Basingstoke - Tel 0345 125743.
The Halyard Marine unit looks good but is expensive - you should be able to knock something up using a proprietary flow switch as above much cheaper. Look in PBO April 1996 - always one of those 'improvements' I meant to do but never got round to it.
If mounted in the hose from seacock to Jabsco pump will immediately warn of no water well before any overheat alarm in the exhaust.

Yep, that's a good solution and totally invaluable IMHO. I made mine up some years ago using a Farnell's unit and a few bits and pieces to make the changes you descibe. I think the Halyard Marine price is horrendous for doing the same job. /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif

Out of interest, PBO did an article on precisely this set up some years ago but got the wiring wrong and published the coorection in the next issue. A search on their site might fling up the ciruits/components they suggested. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Hi ems
I did the same with the advice of (dickh) on PBO forum and it works so brilliantly that two of my mates have also fitted them to there boats using the farnell switch.

I am in the process of fiting a Vetus sensor and indicator - much cheaper than the Halyard Marine Exhaust Guard - and the sensor is purpose designed to fit the rubber exhaust hose.
Vetus part Nos are XHSH for the sensor and XHI12 for the dashboard instrument / alarm. Total cost from French Marine Motors (Brightlingsea) was £86.95
