I want to top up the coolant in my newish Yanmar. Apparently the present coolant is Texaco Havoline XLC, but, with only 4 Texaco stations in east Sussex and none of them near to me, I can't get hold of this. Does anyone know what other coolant would be compatible? Thanks....

I've just looked on the net under 'Texaco Havoline XLC' that put me to a landRover forum as that spec was an earlier choice for LandRover Defender vehicles but later vehicles use the AFC version. there was a notification issued not to mix the two or use the new alternative,so I reckon that your only source is either your Texaco garage or nearest Yanmar agent (Marine Power at Bursledon will certainly have some).
The say that if mixed the liquids turn to a 'porridge' and do not cool properly.

The mix to be used of the XLC is probably 50/50 with water(distilled),but check with Yanmar.

I have a 3YM30 Yanmar, and I have investigated this issue thoroughly, as the original Jeanneau coolant caused blockages in the cooling fins of the intercooler unit.

The Texaco, as you rightly point out, is not easily available. In fact most Texaco franchises DO NOT STOCK IT. So ring before oyu drive.

However, happily, I can report that the standard GM/Vauxhall coolant is the same product, being repackaged for General Motors by Texaco. It is Orange, as you would expect.

Also, strangly for a dealer product, it is not eye wateringly expensive.
I buy it in 1 Litre screw tops. But it is around £14 for 5 litres.

Available at ALL main dealers over the counter.

I do not dilute it, and have had no problems fo the last 5 seasons, 750 hours.

There are basically two types of ethylene glycol based antifreeze.

One uses the traditional silicate based inhibitor system .
The other uses organic acid technology (OAT) .

The two types should not be mixed although it is possible to get a universal top up solution suitable for either.
Texaco XLC is the OAT type.
Havoline Extended life antifreeze is also the OAT type

Any other brand of silicate free OAT antifreeze should be compatible. Halfords even offer an own brand one and a Comma brand one.
I'd try to get Texaco XLC if possible though.

Halfords also have a universal top up solution which you could use for topping up

Texaco "Antifreeze Coolant" is the traditional silicate type.

Just to confuse matters there are also hybrid antifreezes that combine silicate and OAT. For example Havoline "Custom Made" designed for modern Ford and Chrysler engines
