engine bay lighting - suggestions?

Went to the computer shop and bought a set of two bright white fluorescent white "cold cathode" tubes together with a little inverter box for about 7 pounds. They are very thin (intended for "case modding"), but have the advantage that they come in sturdy acrylic tubes, making the whole setup not much more deeper than 12 mm.

Don't agree with any of your replies. I use mounted led head torch the miners type mounted in engine compartment. That way if you engine dies and or battery flat you have emergency lighting and can lift them off and use on your forehead.
Alternatively the round cheapies at b&q with the pull switch that takes a couple of u2 batteries. No wiring - no complications!!!???

thanks for the contribution but I am looking to wire something in. I carry 4 torches on board already as well as 3 plug in to 12v socket options but was looking to install 'instant' illumination to the bay for checks and possible investigations .

I think that the 12 v fluorescents as have been recommended by others are the best alternative.

The comments about strobe effect danger in vessel engine compartments are totally incorrect and 230/110 v fluorescents are commonly (always?) installed in the engine compartments of new commercial vessels with no worries at all - including in new builds I have project managed, which have been designed by internationally respected naval architects for very experienced fleet operators (I have also double checked back through some yard design proposals from a number of countries for new builds and they all specify fluorescents in the machinery spaces as well).
