The problem is with the governor linkage. Have you had any work done on the governor or injection pump recently? The adjustment on the linkage is critical! the engine will either rev its nut's off or not start at all, if you are a few degree's out of adjustment. Obtain a YSE/YSB service manual and follow the adjustment procedure. However, the springs on the linkage or the fuel pump mybe worn out. If you are still stuck, call either Cellar Marine or Marine Power Bursledon.
Thanks for all this. The oil is the only recent change, other than general wear and tear. I think high oil combined with general wear is most likely cause - and I'll test this out on Saturday with chopping board at the ready. Thanks.
If your oil level is a bit high, and lowering it corrects the problem, do check your oil level after a run. If the level becomes high again, you have diesel leakiing into the oil.
