Enforcement - Speed limit

We had several Ribs and a Dory speeding by Pangbourne Meadow at the weekend. The Dory came past at aprox 25knots with the Ribs trying to keep up. We called the lock keeper but wasn't much he could do as the boats had launched at the slipway and didn't appear to have a name so assume also unlicensed.
 
As per normal.... No licence, no boat name.... too much trouble!

PL Isis actually went out for a little while on Sunday.... The rest of the Bank Holiday weekend it was safely tied up a Shepperton!

One of the TWYC boats was stopped for speeding recently, and warned. he claimed he was only going 3.7kts, so obviously has a faulty speed log. Speeds seemed to have dropped this weekend, with quite a few nudging a bit over but no huge wake issues, so who cares.

Nice to see things back to normal. Wonder how long it will last!! :rolleyes:
 
Do Salters have a speed limit exemption certificate?

Mary Stuart was traveling WAY beyond the limits on her way upstream from Sonning to Reading at around 10.30am yesterday morning. SWMBO, who has zero interest in boats, suddenly said 'Bl00dy hell...look at the speed he's going!'

....unfortunately I have a Windows 8 phone.....so by the time I had unlocked it....selected the camera....switched to video....pointed...she had passed far beyond us.

Not the first time either....
 
Salters do tend to exceed the limits but have you noticed how little wash they leave, suction, yes! but wash, no!

Problems often relate to smaller vessels keeping pace with larger vessels. Many boaters seem unaware that hull shape and particularly length are predominant factors for excessive wash. The desire for boaters to keep their places or even overtake when traversing from one lock to the next appears to be the motivation. The 4.3 knot limit over the ground on the non tidal Thames has been defined to get some sort of control but clearly is influenced by the river flow rates when related to wash. I really don't know how the position can be defined to discourage the creation of excessive wash which I think is to what people most object.
 
Hello, this my first post.:)

Having spent months working all hours on my boat while it was in the water, I've seen it all this year. Speedboats on the plane(complete with hand gestures), dinghys with their bows skywards and white water behind them and the usual suspects in the passenger vessels, coming too close to moored boats too fast and showing no consideration whatsoever, even to a chap on his wheelhouse roof waving his arms with paintbrush in hand.

I saw no sign of enforcement on my 3 week cruise from Teddington to Abingdon, but I did receive a few flyers in locks. Preaching to the converted in a lock is not going to stop the unregistered menace from the slipways, but a time check on passenger boats from Teddington to Hampton court would make mooring on that stretch a safer and more comfortable experience.

Absolutely not. I am assured by the EA that the only boats that are exempt from the speed limit are the coaching craft used by rowing clubs, and then only when they are actively engaged in coaching.

The same problem exists downriver in the Teddington - HAmpton Court stretch where trip boats not only travel too fast but pay no regard to the discomfort they cause for moored boats at places like the Barge Walk.

Instead of having a whinge here, why not write to Reading and make a complaint giving the name of the boat, time and date. If they get enough complaints I'm sure they will have words with the operators, regardless of whether they have enough evidence for prosecution.
 
No need to go and trudge the towpaths for offenders, just a quick scan of ebay from the desk will do...
