I'm a complete novice so any advice gratefully accepted. Just got a Shetland 570 with a bmc 1500 wortham blake mated to an Enfield Z drive. This boat has spent most of its life on a trailer and the engine hasn't been started for 15 or 20 years. I've started work on the engine but don't know what to do with the outdrive other than change the oil. Is there something else I should be checking to see if its ok ? I need to replace the morse cable to the gear change lever as this is broken also the cable to lever fitting is missing, anyone know where I can get this. Bit unsure how the combined morse accelerator, gear change works, from what I can see with the lever in the central position the engine is at tickover and the outdrive in neutral, pushing the lever forward should engage forward gear and increase revs, similarly pulling the lever back should do the same only in reverse, is this right? If so how do you start the engine with full throttle as I've been advised without having the drive in gear.

These are z drive suppliers. There are others as well if you google them.
To start the engine without engaging the gears is done by making sure the morse control is in neutral the grasp the handle where it meets the case and pull it out at the same time push the control in forward or reverse this will set the throttle up for starting.
Good luck with them and dont forget to check the bellows.

Check for signs of oil leaks at the output shaft, gear selector and reverse locking pin.

As said check the bellows for cracks and also check the swivel lock pin, reverse catch and tilt pins all move freely.

Bob Knowles has the rights to these beasts but he tends to treat people like 4 year old millionaires (IMHO), I prefer to use Sonic for parts, lots of parts are the same and they won’t try and sell you a new leg.

If you send me a PM with your Email I will send you the handbook in PDF if you don't have one.

Thanks for the advice. Have just looked at the outdrive and noticed that there appears to be an oil leak from the prop shaft, I assume that the shaft seal needs replacing. Is this a diy job and is it difficult? Have downloaded the handbook thanks.

I know this is an old thread. I have just overhauled a pair of 130 Enfields.
I am indebted to Andy at Chertsey Meads Marine.
He had everything needed in stock and was a font of knowledge, freely giving hard earned advice in all aspects of dismantling and re-bulding these dependable old drives.
With some care, good quality but basic tools , a bit of heat and a sturdy bench the job is approachable by any reasonably competent mechanic.
