Enfield outdrive conversion

Hi guys, new to this forum, currently own a 30ft cleopatra with twin 2.5DI ford diesels running through OMC legs, not strong enough, keep breaking the shift lever which requires a lift out and lower gearcase rebuild each time, 3 times this year, getting bored, although can now strip down a lower gear case with ease and aplomb. Considering Enfield, any advice greatly appreciated

Alot of boats use 2.5di's and enfield but id be concerned too that they may not be strong enough in the long run, as they are close to the upper torque limit specified for them. A friend of mine had problems with his which were fitted to 2.2 BMC engines on a Cleopatra 850. Their really designed for slower river cruisers with small engines.

You may have more luck with some second hand volvo drives such as the 280 / 290, they are alot stronger than the enfields.

Either way, the work will involve removing the engines, and altering the holes to suit. You may need to either block them up, or enlarge the hole depending on what drive you use, and fill and drill new holes for mounting bolts.

The engines will also require adapting to suit, but all of this can be had from lancing marine. They will also be able to tell you for certain whether or not the enfield will be suitable. There have been many changes to their internals over the years, such as stronger bearings, so they may be more reliably than the ones I have experience of.

Just about to fit twin 2.5 FSD's to my enfield 130H legs. I too was advised to keep the power to somewhere around 80HP with diesels, as the higher torque would kill them.

seem to be fine with 130HP AQ Volvo's.

If i had unlimited coinage, i would do high output deisels and possible a pair of duo-props....

but as i'm constrained by budget, the diesels will be "closed down" somewhat, depending on the testing of the boat.

if i could find a cheap pair of 290's... i'd probably consider re-powering with larger engines.

Really nice to see boats like this brought back up to the condition that yours is in. You must be really pleased. Good photos and hope you get drives sorted.

Thanks for all the info and comments, we are now seriously considering the Volvo 290 route as these can take a 16" prop as opposed to the Enfield 14" max, this would hopefully give us a bit more drive at lazier revs. Will keep you posted.
